You might be reading this at work. Or on the bus going to work. Or at home having a coffee before getting dressed for work. Or while sitting in the waiting room of a garage as your car gets repaired so you can use it for work.
Work. Work. Work. Work.
So much of your life is geared to work. It goes beyond the 9-to-5. Half your free time is spent doing things in preparation for work.
The problem is you hate your job. And as a corollary, you hate much of your day-to-day life. You probably have dreams of sticking it to the ‘man’ and starting your own company – this way you reap the rewards of your hard work.
This sounds great in theory, but here’s a PSA for all you wannabe entrepreneurs out there: self-employment will fck you up.
When you are an entrepreneur you don’t have the luxury of EVER switching off. When you run a business, your family’s ability to eat depends on your next kill – so you are always thinking about the hunt. This can be extremely stressful and tiring.
The ability to develop, grow and maintain a business is an esoteric task. There is no real formula for success, so your business will often send you down paths that lead nowhere. Things that worked in the past suddenly stop working. Clients leave for no apparent reason. Tastes change. New competitors turn the industry upside down.
Can you imagine your state of mind as you try to figure all this out? Of course, the rent still needs to be paid each month so time is not your friend.
Meanwhile, the 9-to-5 worker drone serving at the whims of the ‘man’ gets to forget about work every evening, spend time with his family and receive a predictable pay check.
Remember this next time you dream about the ‘freedom’ of self-employment.
